The importance of addressing SAP compatibility scope

  • Understand the clock on compatibility packs: Most SAP Compatibility Packs expired on December 31, 2025, with limited exceptions, making it crucial to act now to avoid operational disruptions.
  • Mitigate risks and ensure compliance: Continuing to use expired compatibility packs can lead to legal, financial, and operational risks, including potential audit penalties.
  • Get more value out of your SAP system: Transitioning away from outdated functionalities enables access to advanced SAP capabilities like SAP Transportation Management and SAP Extended Warehouse Management for improved efficiency.
  • Tailor your roadmap with expert guidance: A custom analysis by experienced SAP architects can help prioritize high-impact areas and streamline the transition to modern SAP capabilities.

The importance of addressing SAP compatibility scope

Overview of SAP compatibility scope

As organizations have transitioned to SAP S/4HANA over the past decade, one critical aspect that is frequently overlooked is the management of SAP Compatibility Scope. To facilitate a more simplified path for customers migrating from SAP ECC to SAP S/4HANA, SAP introduced Compatibility Packs (as part of Compatibility Scope).  With these packs, certain classic functionalities remained usable within SAP S/4HANA for a limited term. For most components, the usage rights expired on December 31, 2025, although certain exceptions extend until 2030 for SAP Cloud ERP Private customers.

Why addressing compatibility scope is critical

Avoiding operational disruption

Once the temporary usage rights expire, SAP will no longer provide updates, bug fixes, or official support for compatibility scope items. Although these functions may continue to work in the short term, they are not assured to integrate with future releases or security patches. This creates a risk for businesses that continue to rely on outdated processes, potentially leading to unexpected disruptions.

Ensuring compliance

Using compatibility packs past their expiration date is a violation of SAP’s contractual terms. Organizations that ignore this may face legal and financial risks, including potential audit findings and penalties.

Enabling future innovation

Compatibility packs were never designed to be a long-term solution. Migrating away from these items allows organizations to take advantage of advanced capabilities in areas such as SAP Transportation Management (TM), SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM), and Service Management in SAP Cloud ERP Private, leading to improved efficiency and scalability.

Steps to address compatibility scope

Prioritizing high-impact areas

Each SAP customer has unique business processes and therefore requires a custom analysis to be completed by an experienced SAP Architect.  Utilizing the tools provided by SAP such as Way Forward Guide and Compatibility Scope Matrix we identify high impact scope items.  The Way Forward guide is SAP’s official, periodically updated explainer that accompanies Compatibility Scope for SAP Cloud ERP. It consolidates in one document the status of each classic SAP ECC capability that was temporarily allowed in SAP S/4HANA via Compatibility Packs and spells out SAP’s direction for each item (what replaces it, whether the replacement already exists, and whether more is on the roadmap).

Recommendations for prioritizing scope items

In some cases, the adoption of compatibility scope items is simple (via an SAP Note or configuration change), however there are scenarios where small projects may be necessary to adopt modern SAP solutions. Below are a few common examples:

  • Replace LE-WM with SAP Stock Room Management or SAP Embedded EWM.
  • Transition from LE-TRA to SAP Transportation Management (TM).
  • Move from CS to Service Management in SAP Cloud ERP Private.
  • Adopt Universal Journal

Planning for clean-core architecture

It’s worth noting that compatibility pack solutions may have contained custom ABAP code in the form of user exits, Badis and enhancement points.  It is important not to replicate existing SAP ECC customizations in the new SAP Cloud ERP environment. Instead, organizations should use SAP’s extensibility options and best practices to maintain a lean, upgrade-friendly system — striving toward to principles of SAP Clean Core.
