To achieve your training goals this year you need to play it SMART not lose

When helping Learning Managers set their organizational training goals we always ensure the desired outcomes are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timed)

As is traditional at this time of year, we all reflect upon the previous 12 months and contemplate what things we want to do even better in the coming weeks.

We have worked closely with many leading Learning and Development Managers to ensure the right skills are taught to the right people, when they are needed. Thousands of people have attended our accredited Business Intelligence training courses; which includes: SAP BusinessObjects, SAP HANA, SQL, Microsoft BI, and Tableau courses; from many hundreds of organizations and without exception the key to truly successful learning plans lays in understanding the training needs of the business.

When employees appreciate the most optimal and timely way to carry out a process you are assured of the best possible outcome for your business.

This is achieved by considering the business needs, current competencies, training methods, cost and effectiveness. And these need to be addressed at the organisational, group and individual levels.

Playing it SMART

The most important thing is a clear understanding of your desired outcomes. What are your objectives? How will the Business Intelligence training course fit in with personal development plans? Will the learning plug specific “skills gaps”?

Let’s use an example of a BusinessObjects reports developer who is ready to work more closely with your business analysts and engage more deeply in defining business requirements.

Ensure you are guiding your employees towards Specific outcomes. Usually this will focus upon moving someone forwards in a way that benefits them, and the company.  Be sure you then Measure whether the goal has been met, you need to determine what skills need to be gained in order to mature into the wider “BI Professional” role and ensure relevant milestones are being met. And you must ensure that this is Achievable. Is the person ready to embark on this journey? Are you willing to invest in them? Can you ensure they will have the time they need?

You must be Realistic; are you working towards something that is going to benefit the business? Is this the right person? Can you afford to do it (and can you afford NOT to)?  Is it the right time to be extending this role? Put Timed metrics on this, especially in terms of attending required external courses. Failure to do so will likely mean the focus drifts and that would be a negative result for the employee and for the business.

Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timed

To help you be “SMART” NTT DATA Business Solutions have developed a systematic approach to Training Needs Analysis. In essence this type of systematic approach determines what training needs to take place and considers Business Needs, Current Competencies, Training Methods, Cost and Effectiveness.

It helps you understand and address skills gaps at the organisational and individual level and aims to ensure the maximum return on training throughout the organisation and helps you avoid three common mistakes, namely: teaching the right people the wrong skills, teaching the right skills to the wrong people and teaching the right skills to the right people but in the wrong way.
