When it comes to the numerous SAP S/4HANA versions that have been released so far, you can actually distinguish between two separate SAP S/4HANA roadmaps: since SAP offers its ERP with the deployment options of being hosted on-premise or in a cloud environment, updates of SAP S/4HANA are distributed with a different SAP release strategy.
SAP S/4HANA Cloud
One option is to deploy the system in a public cloud environment.
The product used in this case is SAP S/4HANA Cloud, which can only be put into operation as part of a new implementation, also known as a ‘greenfield’ approach. SAP S/4HANA Cloud contains only the innovations that SAP has developed since 2015, works only with the new Fiori interfaces, and can be used as part of RISE with SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Public Edition.
RISE with SAP is the comprehensive offering of an intelligent, customized solution for digital business transformation as a service. SAP GROW is an alternative for customers who do not yet have an SAP solution in place.
The release of the SAP S/4HANA Cloud product line is identified by the release year and month of the version, for example, SAP S/4HANA CLOUD 2208.
No matter which version you choose, you will receive a new SAP S/4HANA release every quarter.
SAP S/4HANA On-Premise
SAP S/4HANA On-Premise contains all the innovations that SAP has developed since 2015, as well as the classic SAP ECC functions that are required for the technical migration of existing ECC systems to SAP S/4HANA systems.
However, the classic SAP GUI is still included in this product line. SAP S/4HANA is designed for operation in a private cloud, i.e. on-premise. Therefore, SAP S/4HANA is the product that is deployed as part of RISE with SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Private Edition.
For companies following this more traditional hosting strategy, SAP releases a new version every year. Starting in 2020, this will be indicated by the year, for example, SAP S/4HANA 2023. Since the first introduction of the new Business Suite in 2015, there have been a total of eight on-premise versions of SAP S/4HANA, each of which is or has been in maintenance for five years. Starting with SAP S/4HANA 2023, SAP will move to a two-year release cycle. These releases will be in maintenance for seven years.
Regardless of the product and release, SAP will offer only mainstream maintenance for SAP S/4HANA, and there is no option to extend the maintenance cycle by paying additional compensation for extended maintenance.
